Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Director of Campus Recreation for Programs, this position provides leadership and management of all aspects of student development and training for Campus Recreation. The Associate Director will also have supervisory responsibilities for the management of the Outdoor Adventures program. Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides recreation and wellness programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 900 student staff members. Specific responsibilities include the implementation and expansion of a department-wide student development and training program. This position will be integral in training and mentoring the staff who are responsible for the daily implementation of this comprehensive effort. Management and supervision of a Student Development and Training Coordinator and management and supervision of Outdoor Adventures including three full-time staff members (one Assistant Director and two Coordinators) and approximately 45 student staff who provide recreational opportunities including more than 60 outdoor trips and clinics annually with an annual operating budget in excess of $375,000. Outdoor Adventures is also responsible for programming and staffing a bouldering wall and climbing wall suite in the IM Building, as well as a comprehensive challenge course program (Vertical Adventures) located at the Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area. The Associate Director provides vital leadership in the Department of Campus Recreation and is invested in the growth, direction and progress of the department as a whole, in addition to his/her individual areas of responsibility. The Associate Director must have an understanding of departmental vision, mission, values and goals, as well as student development theory and be able to communicate this information with Assistant Directors, Coordinators and student staff. The Associate Director will collaborate with both internal and external groups to complete the job responsibilities and support the Department of Campus Recreation and manage a student-fee allocated budget of more than $475,000. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Masters degree in educational administration, recreation or sport management or a related field is preferred. Must have full-time experience managing collegiate recreation programs, facilities, and/or services including the supervision of full-time staff members. Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices as they related to collegiate recreation programs, facilities and services is essential. Leadership and supervisory skills to select, supervise, motivate and evaluate student employees relative to work performance, crisis management, risk management, customer service, and peer relationships as demonstrated through past supervision of full time and student staff are crucial. Ability to develop and manage databases, assessment, and reports directly related to Student Development and Training are vital. Budgeting skills to develop, supervise and manage multiple, assigned program budgets and prioritize use of funds are required. This position requires independent work on complex assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Senior Leadership Team as appropriate. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental and Student Affairs initiatives and efforts. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential.
